Moses in Alaska

Posted: November 11, 2006  3:16 p.m. Anchorage, Alaska by Ira Garner © 2008

How amazing to realize the great efforts that were put out to defeat tyranny during World War II; especially in the light of those who would attack a nation that declares and lives by freedoms endowed unto us by God.

Recently on a trip up to Alaska the sign in downtown Anchorage declared the fact that the United States had been attacked twice.

Once on December 7th 1941 and of course on September 9th 2001 (911), certainly those two dates will be never forgotten, however because this was Alaska, I did have to correct them.

Here is the information on a battle that lasted one year and cost tremendously. This caused bloody fighting: there were 3,929 U.S. casualties: 549 were killed, 1,148 were injured, 1,200 had severe cold injuries, 614 succumbed to disease, and 318 died of miscellaneous causes, largely Japanese booby traps and friendly fire.

My title was Moses in Alaska, that was because Charlton Heston, a venerated actor served as an Army Air force supply SSgt and gunner, on the Island of Kodiak, Alaska. He is one of the many of the  greatest generation.

Lest we Forget, and not even put up a sign or teach the history to our children.

So maybe Alaska might decide to teach the next generation what happened in Alaska during WW11!
